Dave Mackenzie Responds To The Throne Speech – Supports Government's "Tough On Crime" Measures
October 18, 2007
Ottawa, ON – Today, Dave MacKenzie, Member of Parliament for Oxford, spoke in the House of Commons in support of the Government’s Throne Speech and their clear agenda to tackle crime and strengthen the security of Canadians. He began by paying tribute to Constable Christopher John Worden, the RCMP Officer tragically killed in the line of duty, October 6th 2007 near Hay River, N.W.T. "On behalf of the people of Oxford County where his wife Jodie's family lives, I would like to share our deepest sympathies and pay tribute to the courage and dedication he showed in protecting Canadians." Although the national homicide rate in 2006 fell by 10%, other violent crimes especially those linked to gangs and youth showed a troubling increase; This Government realizes that there is always more that can be done to provide Canadians with increased safety and security. "There is no greater responsibility for a Government than to protect the right of its citizens to safety and security. Despite the resistance by the opposition to pass laws that will make our streets safer, we made significant financial investments in law enforcement and safe communities. I am proud to be part of a government that appreciates the vital role law enforcement plays and that is prepared to provide the resources and legislative tools needed to make our communities safe. The Speech from the Throne and our renewed focus on tackling crime and protecting communities will build on our successes." |
